The Methley plum tree is a Japanese plum variety which is one of the favored and bears heavy crops consistently. In fact, these trees produce delicious purplish-red plums with radiant white flowers in the early spring. Not only is the fruit medium – large with delicious juicy, sweet, clingstone flesh, but it is also perfect for canning as well as eating off the tree.

General Tree Height/Caliper: Most of our fruit trees (apple, peach, apricot, plum, pear, nectarine, quince, and cherry) are grafted/budded and are 4-6' tall with a caliper/diameter of about 1/4-3/4". Most have more than 5' height and 1/2" diameter. The other trees are seedlings, such as pawpaw, mulberry, persimmon, shade, berry, and flowering trees which range from 18-36" tall.

Methley Plum Tree Overview

The Methley plum tree is a Japanese plum variety which is one of the favored and bears heavy crops consistently. In fact, these trees produce delicious purplish-red plums with radiant white flowers in the early spring. Not only is the fruit medium – large with delicious juicy, sweet, clingstone flesh, but it is also perfect for canning as well as eating off the tree.

Contrary to their name, Japanese plums actually originated in China. They were then brought to the US through Japan in the 1800’s. Compared to the European varieties, Japanese varieties are juicier, and not quite as sweet. Additionally, they are more vigorous, disease resistant, and produce more flowers.

Just like any other plum tree, the Methley plum tree grows best in full sun with well-drained, loamy soil. While it can grow well in hardiness zones 4-9, it is susceptible to late spring frosts. However it also tolerates heat well. Additionally, it needs around 150–250 chill hours which are the average hours of air temperature between 32° and 45° F in a typical winter season. When it blooms, it will decorate the landscape with a bouquet of aromatic, white blossoms in the early spring. Growing Characteristics

  • Harvest period: Late May to early June depending on the location. You can pick them before they are fully ripe since they will continue to ripen afterwards.
  • Pollination: While Methley is self-fruitful, in order for it to bear lots of fruit, we recommend growing this variety with Santa Rosa Japanese plum tree or with another Japanese variety such as Fortune. It is also a great pollinator for other Japanese plums.
  • Cultivation: This plum tree grows best in full sun with loamy well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0. Additionally Methley plum trees will bear heavy crops after 2-4 growing seasons. It grows in an irregular shape.

Warranty

  • If your tree doesn’t grow by July 1st or dies in the fall of the first year, please email us with a photo, order number, and description of the issue.
  • If the issue is related with the tree itself rather than lack of care, we guarantee to replace it next season or give a full refund.

Refunds and Cancellations

  • You can cancel your order to receive a full refund, but please note that cancelling an order after April 1st will result in a partial refund of 75% of the order total.
  • We much prefer payments by credit card or PayPal. If you pay by check or cash, then payments for pickup and shipping orders should be received within 30 days of your order, otherwise will be automatically cancelled.
  • If due to unforeseen circumstances your ordered tree is no longer available, you can get a full refund or a substitution with another variety.
