The Balaton tart cherry originated in the small Hungarian village of Újfehértó after the Second World War and is named Újfehértói Fürtös, which means “Bunched of Újfehértó”. Released commercially in Hungary in 1970. Introduced to the United States in 1984 by Dr. Amy Iezzoni, a cherry breeder from Michigan State University and released commercially in the United States 1998. To make a link to Hungary, Dr. Iezzoni named Balaton after Lake Balaton. The fruit has dark burgundy skin and flesh. It is high-quality, large in size and firm. It is good for fresh market, processing and for the home garden. The fruit is resistant to rain-cracking. The tree is self-fertile. Balaton cherry tree variety grows in hardiness zones 5-8.

General Tree Height/Caliper: Most of our fruit trees (apple, peach, apricot, plum, pear, nectarine, quince, and cherry) are grafted/budded and are 4-6' tall with a caliper/diameter of about 1/4-3/4". Most have more than 5' height and 1/2" diameter. The other trees are seedlings, such as pawpaw, mulberry, persimmon, shade, berry, and flowering trees which range from 18-36" tall.
A rootstock primarily controls a tree's size and how early it bears fruit. Learn more about our specific rootstocks.
