Spigold apple tree developed at the New York Agricultural Station in Geneva, New York. It is a cross between Red Spy and Golden Delicious and released in 1962.
The fruit size is large, skin has green ground color and red over color. The flesh is firm, aromatic and it has sweetness of Golden Delicious. It has good fresh eating quality and can be used for apple sauce, pie, cider, and juice making.
Tree is large and has upright growing habit. To avoid biannual bearing fruit thinning is required during fruit set. Fruit ripens late with Delicious. It is triploid and needs two other varieties to get pollinated. Fruit stores more than four month at cold storage. It is cold hardy variety and grows cold hardiness zones 4-7.
