Spigold Apple Tree
Spigold is a cross between Red Spy and Golden Delicious and released in 1962. The fruit is large with red skin. It is aromatic apple with good dessert quality. It is triploid and for fruit set needs two other varieties. It is cold hardy and grows zones 4-7.
General Tree Height/Caliper: Our grafted/budded apple, peach, apricot, plum, pear, nectarine, and cherry trees are about 4-6' tall with a caliper/diameter of about 1/4-3/4". Most have more than 5' height and 1/2" diameter. Most other trees are seedlings ranging from 18-36" tall. You know if a tree is a seedling when the rootstock selected says "Seedling".

Spigold apple tree developed at the New York Agricultural Station in Geneva, New York. It is a cross between Red Spy and Golden Delicious and released in 1962.
The fruit size is large, skin has green ground color and red over color. The flesh is firm, aromatic and it has sweetness of Golden Delicious. It has good fresh eating quality and can be used for apple sauce, pie, cider, and juice making.
Tree is large and has upright growing habit. To avoid biannual bearing fruit thinning is required during fruit set. Fruit ripens late with Delicious. It is triploid and needs two other varieties to get pollinated. Fruit stores more than four month at cold storage. It is cold hardy variety and grows cold hardiness zones 4-7.
