Red Astrachan apple tree (a.k.a. Red Astrakhan, Astrachan, Beauty of Wales, …) originated in Astrakhan region of Russia before 1800. It has medium size fruit with bright red attractive and striped skin color. The flesh is soft and white with slightly acid flavor. It ripens 9 weeks before Delicious and R.D. Way from New York State Experimental Station, Geneva described it as “Beautiful early summer apple.” Tree is vigorous, with large leaves, and medium yields. To avoid biennial cropping, proper thinning of fruit and pruning should be done each year.
